Miami, Florida – South Beach (HDR)

Happy New Year everyone! 2012 is gonna be the best year yet!! The shot above is from an early AM at South Beach. It s a little cool here in TX today…a day at the beach sounds good!!! I know our holidays are over…but why not take another??? Stay warm!

San Diego, CA – Harbor (HDR)

From San Diego here is an HDR of some boats in the harbor. When traveling I always try to take an early morning walk before the day starts to grab some pics. Its always quiet at sunrise and its hard not to get some sweet shots. Boats in the water are always a tough choice for HDR. It all depends on if the day is calm. Any rough conditions and the boats will be moving…not good at all for multiple brackets. I lucked out this day! Enjoy!

Austin, TX – Lake Travis Balloon Launch

I was home for the weekend and had a chance to head up to see the yearly sunrise Balloon Launch in Lake Travis. I hooked up with my buds…Jim Nix and Michael Tuuk…and we grabbed lots of shots! They started up around 6:45 AM they were all gone by 7:30 AM! An easy photographic start to a day! Here a few shots. After I processed it…I like the solo balloon shot up in the air…the inside of the balloon design looks like the people inside are trying to hold up the gondola!

Boulder, CO – Varsity Lake (HDR)

From the lovely Boulder, Colorado…at the University of Colorado this is a small bridge on campus located at Varsity Lake. I was out doing business this week and woke up at 5 AM to grab some shot of the Hotel Boulderado (coming soon) and the sun was coming up around 6:45 AM.  I drove over to Varsity Lake (I had never been) and loved the view!  The reflections were wonderful!  Only one person walked over the bridge while I was taking the shots.  I sat at waters edge and snapped away.  The sun came up and it was back to the hotel to begin my day!  As it is early spring in CO, I’d love to see this spot in summer and in Fall!   Fall would be amazing!  Hope to get more versions one day soon!  Have a great weekend!

Orlando, FL – A morning stroll at Lake Eola Park (HDR)

When I was in Orlando recently I wanted to get some sunset and sunrise shots at the lovely Lake Eola Park.   The sky was not perfect, but I grabbed some HDR and IR photos.  I parked on the street  this early morning and was about to head out and looked back at the park.  I am a big fan of any photos with palm trees…so I decided to snap this shot before I left.  It was a nice quiet warm morning this day.  I will be back.  It was my first visit ever here and enjoyed it very much.  Not a ton to shoot, but some good angles of the lake and the city.  Will post those soon!  Have fun!

Huntington Beach, CA – Pier (HDR)

From a few weekends ago…I woke up early to catch the sunrise at Huntington Beach Pier on a Saturday morning..  I was lucky…at around 6:20 ish AM the lights on the pier automatically shut off…I was able to catch 2 HDR’s in time!    The photo above was one shot.  As I continued to shoot the pier…it was cool to see all the surfers arrive at the same time.  I grabbed a few shots up on the pier…will post em one day soon.  This pier is a great subject.  I had never shot it before.  I’d like to go back one day at sunset and try some more shots.  I had brought with me my “Star” filter in hopes to try my first HDR with the filter to see how it looks.  But the lights on the pier went out too soon. Already the long exposure creates a flare on the lights.  What will it do to and HDR? I have no idea??   I’ll try it one day! That is the fun of photography…so many styles to try!!   As the sun rose, I put on my B&W ND Filter #106.  I had fun trying to gain the smoky water effect.  After the sun was up on the horizon…my pier time was over!  Onto surfing shots!!

St. Augustine, Florida – A Break in the Clouds (HDR)

When in Florida a few weeks back I had a Saturday AM to do anything the day before the race.  I had always wanted to visit St. Augustine.  There are a few historical sights there to see and visit.  From Orlando it was about a 75 minute drive to get there.  My goal was to get a beach shot with the sun rising.   Time was important, so I left at 5:23 AM and arrived at St. Augustine Beach at 6:36 AM…20 minutes before the sunrise!  Whew!   With all the cold weather we have been having in the US…it was amazing to me that on Feb 13th this AM it was only 37 degrees in Florida!!   Yikes!!!

When I drove up to the beach I got out and and checked out the scene.  About 1/2 mile away I saw this pier in the distance!  Bonus!  I jumped in and drove to it…just a fishing pier with a parking lot.  I sat in the car for a few minutes…at the beach there probably was a 15-20 mile wind….subtract that with 37 degrees = freezing my &$#@* off!!  …in Florida???  What luck!   So about 10 minutes before sunrise I started taking many HDR’s.  The sky was perfect, but I was worried the sun would not be able to pop through the clouds.

The around 7:15 AMish…the sun rose…and magically the clouds somewhat broke!  I had my opportunity!  I was taking 5 exposures, moving a few feet and taking more and more HDRs!   I could see that the sun was pumping out the flares…wonderful!!  …I knew time was short.    What was also great… the waves were large!  Probably 5-10 feet and breaking all over!!  Coming in strong at a 45 degree angle!  The sun disappeared in 10 minutes and I did as well in 20 minutes.  My hands were frozen!!  All worth it!!!  The fun of photography!!   I’ll post another shot from St. Augustine next week.
