My HDR backgrounds have ben selling like hotcakes and one of the amazing photographer that has been using my backgrounds is Megan Drane of Firefly Nights Photography! She is an award winning portrait and commercial photographer located in Chicago. I like her style…her bio from her web site notes… “Our goal is not to provide you with pictures that will be on your desk until the next milestone, but to provide art that can stand the test of time.” Right on Megan!!
If you read my article on HDR Composites in HDR One Magazine and Inspire Magazine….being an artist is what composites are all about! We chatted via email and she noted she was looking for something new to offer her clients and HDR Composites have been giving her business rave reviews!! If you are in the Chicago area…please give Megan a call! Visit her site and blog from this link….Firefly Nights Photography …and check out her stunning photos!
This recent composite is one of my favs…it is my daughters softball team. It is our first season of softball. Def a fantastic sport for girls. We have a great team and coaches. While watching the games every weekend I had recent thought about a “Team Poster”. Once the background was complete…the fun part was to get the photo session complete in mid-season. This past Saturday I brought all my gear (I’ll post the list below) and set up a white backdrop clamped onto the backstop. I do not use green screen. It can cause a green hue for composites. I had an hour to photograph all the players as they warmed up before the game. We got it in and I processed for about 3 hours Sunday AM to complete the poster. Now its time to order some prints or vinyl banners!!! I really enjoy doing these posters….hopefully I will have a chance to photograph more teams in the future! Such a great keepsake!
Nikon 70-200 f/2.8
Denny Mfg Freedom Cloth – White backdrop
2 – clamps (purchased at Home Depot)
Paul C Buff – Einstein 640W Strobe
Paul C Buff 36″ Octa
Paul C Buff Vanguard Mini Battery Pack
I used the Octa straight on to the subjects…I had the camera lower and slightly to the left. The Einstein are amazing lights…so much power! Beautiful even light! I am ready to give up on my hot shoe flashes!!
Here is the wonderful Casey posing at the San Clemente Pier in this HDR Composite. Casey plays for the local Water Polo team. They just completed their season and are now CIF Champions! Congrats to the team and Casey! Great season!! This HDR Composite uses of my my new backgrounds now available to purchase! You can find it here…San Clemente Pier. All backgrounds can be seen here…

Looking for a cool subject to shoot in HDR? Look no further than your local HS Basketball court! I was up one night to HDR the court for backgrounds and took this shot up in the stands using my wide angle.
If any of you shoot in HDR…you know any location in white is always difficult. The tone mapping makes the shot dirty looking. Always work a bit extra to make the whites cleaner looking! I like to keep the HDR look…so my technique is to highlight the white areas using the magic wand (Photoshop) and lower the yellow hue (the hue comes from the gym lights) to make it look whiter and use levels to assist the dirtiness. I want to keep some grit, but just make it nicer.
Go out and support your local high school basketball teams and while there, grab a few HDRs! Go Mustangs!!!
If you have been reading P2E for a while, you know that I am a huge Supercross/Motocross fan. One awesome sport to watch, attend or photograph! Last nite in Anaheim was the season opener for the Monster Enegry Supercross season. I was super pumped as now living in SoCal I can attend Anaheim 1 every year. My father-in-law and I braved the chilly 54 degree nite at Angels Stadium. Yes, that is chilly for us! LOL We had great seats and went early to watch the practice. I brought my 70-200 lens and a teleconverter to get some extra reach. I ended up with 1800+ photos! It was a great nite with some surprises. Above is the first photo I processed. I’ll have more in the future and will try to put an extra kick on them. Ken Roczen is my favorite 250 rider….he finished second last nite in the main event. A nice corner action shot from A1!
If you are into composite photography…please take a look at my HDR backgrounds for sale! Recently I came across of photo of my friend’s sons hockey card they posted on Facebook. I noticed it was my HDR background! Very cool! I searched and found what company was offering such awesome cards!!!
