I was just out in Arizona for Imaging USA and had Saturday free to go shooting. I went out with my good friend John Harper and we trekked up to the abandoned Black Canyon Dog Track. It is about 35 minutes north of Phoenix. The dog track sits above a small town and luckily no signs for “No Trespassing”! We parked and walked towards the track. I have never seen a dog track before in person. This place was very cool! Grunge everywhere. We arrived early AM before the sun was just coming out. Good thing we did have a little light…broken glass is everywhere. We had to watch our steps!
I’ll give you more details in an upcoming post…but one cool place! What was odd…not sure…but when we were leaving a big truck was unloading a big construction truck. Is it scheduled to be demolished or was it just for roadwork? I don’t know. Anyway, glad I had a chance to photograph this great place for HDR!
I recently traveled back to NJ and finally noticed they demolished this old diner in Whitehouse. I think even as a kid it looked like this. I heard there was a fire and it sat at this location for years looking just like this. As I look back I am glad I took an early morning visit to the diner to capture it in its grungy decay. Great for photos!!
I miss the Jersey Diners…my favorite meal at any diner is a Pizza Burger! OK…now as I type this I am hungry! Enjoy!
I also sent 40+ more new backgrounds to Denny Mfg. …they should be out soon! I will advise when they up on their site. You can find my Denny Mfg. backgrounds here….
Thanks for looking!
Pasadena, CA is a perfect SoCal location for HDR. Lots of alleys and grungy areas in Old Town. This was probably a happening place one day? Billy’s Dugout Old Town. Could it have been the Cheers of Pasadena…only the old customers know the story. Looks like the Dugout…struck out. Wonder what it looks like inside? Now that might be a cool HDR!?
Porto, Portugal is a stunning old city. I am lucky enough to visit every couple years. My favorite hotel to stay at is the Pestana Porto Hotel. Some info from their website: Pestana Porto is one of the best hotels in Oporto, located in Praça da Ribeira in the heart of the historic core of Oporto, and standing on the city’s medieval walls, with a magnificent view of the river Douro.
This hotel in Oporto occupies part of a block of 16th, 17th and 18th century building, and has been classified World Heritage by Unesco. Its privileged location makes it possible to cruise down the river Douro, departing from the bank right in front of the hotel, and to take the historic tram to Foz do Douro or visit one of the Port wine cellars.
The shot above has a bit of a grunge look…I use onOne Software Photo Tools 2.6 to get this effect. My favorite setting is “Brian’s TKO”. Click and you get an instant grunge shot!
onOne recently released Perfect Photo Suite 7!!! I have been playing around with it and love it! I will write a review soon!! Get your copy today!!!
From downtown Denver, CO you can find the Capitol Building. I processed this same shot just recently, but just for fun wanted to try a different look. A darker grungier version is above. Which one is better? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!! Here is the other version…

From Cologne…in my opinion, one of the best cities in Germany, this is the amazing Cologne Cathedral. Hard not to miss it when arriving into city…especially via the train. It is probably the most photographed church in all of Germany! Just be quick with your tripod! I snapped off 5 brackets and was told to take it down as I did not have proper approval. Knowing this was a possible outcome…I packed my gorillapod and attached it to the back of the pews and took this HDR. Gave it the grunge look thanks to onOne Software Photo Tools…one of my favorite filter’s “Brian’s TKO”. Thanks to Brian Matiash at onOne!
Don’t forget Perfect Photo Suite 7 is due out soon! I am testing the beta right now!
