HDR Mafia – Pittsburgh Style (HDR Composite)

I had been traveling for about a month now for business and luckily had a few chances to go out shooting when possible. I was in Pittsburgh this past week and gave my good friends Dave DiCello HDR Exposed and Mike Criswell aka Theaterwiz a heads up and we had a few early morning hours to catch some pics before my flight left at noon. We met at 5 AM and you will see in the next few months…we tackled some great locations and took some sweet HDR’s. Thanks to Dave for driving…his knowledge of Pittsburgh is key! Mike cruised in from Ohio and I cant even remember where I came in from…oh yeah Cleveland.

We have an HDR Mafia in Austin…as Mike noted on his blog yesterday…it is time for Mike & Dave to start an East Coast Chapter. Check out Mike’s shot on his blog..another sweet HDR. Dave will get his version up soon! While shooting, we had to capture the moment and look like tough guys…the shot above was our second location for posing. Funny…we were walking in the Strip District and I said…I had seen some old tires stacked in someones shot online…I wish we could find it! Then whammo..right in front of us right after I completed my sentence.

The shot above was an HDR Composite. I am learning this method and its quite easy. Take a normal shot of your subjects and then have them step away and while keeping the camera in the same position…take the scene in HDR (This was 7 exposures). Combine the two in photoshop layers, blend, touch up and thats it! This one I added a little extra touch from onOne’s Photo Tools.

I had a blast shooting with Dave & Mike! Two super talented HDR artists! Follow their blogs and check out their sweet HDR’s! The Burgh Rules! In this pic from left to right: Pete Talke, Dave DiCello, Mike Criswell

Pittsburgh, PA – PNC Park (HDR)

So far the 2011 Major League Baseball season has been interesting.   The usual great teams are mediocre and some traditionally bad teams are playing well!    One of those traditionally bad teams playing well is my Pittsburgh Pirates!  Kudos to them. As of today they are 18-18.  The Bucs have had 18 straight sub .500 seasons.  But as a fan…I will always cheer them on no matter what!  Can they keep it up?  Hopefully!  They have some young talent…McCutchen, Tabata, Alvarez, Walker, McDonald.   Let’s Go Bucs!!

Pittsburgh, PA – Early AM Skyline (HDR)

Here is a shot from this past summer from the lovely city of Pittsburgh, PA.   This view is located on Mount Washington…a perfect spot to catch a skyline view of the Burgh!  I went out shooting early this AM with my good friend…Dave DiCello his blog is HDR Exposed.     There are two inclines you can take to get to the top of the hill and they both have wonderful vantage points.  I can imagine right now from here there may be snow?  I think it will be a crazy winter all over the world!  The holidays are near!  Enjoy!

Pittsburgh, PA – Heinz Chapel (HDR)

Pittsburgh, the city of three rivers.   The Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela.  A favorite spot of mine due to the location of my top sport teams…Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.  I try to visit every year and enjoy photographing this lovely old city.  So many places to see and capture in time.  One of my top spots is the University of Pittsburgh.  You have seen my photos of the Cathedral of Learning….and amazing place!  Just 100 yards away is the stunning Heinz Chapel!   This day I went out with my good friend Dave DiCello and we grabbed quite a few pics this day!!   We stopped in and I took this shot via Fisheye.  I had previously taken a wide angle shots and wanted to get something different.

Its a wonderful spot to see and I am sure it is tough to book for weddings!  Small and lovely!  If you are in Pittsburgh, stop by and enjoy!

Pittsburgh, PA – PNC Park (Infrared)

October is almost here…that means the regular baseball season is coming to a close.  I think it has been 18 consecutive losing season for my Pirates.  I will route for them even if it gets to 40 straight season!  Good luck to all the teams heading to the playoffs…maybe another Yankees vs Phillies rematch?  Not often do you see baseball in infrared…here is the stunning PNC Park (home of the Pirates) in all of its IR Glory!    Hope the shot is a home run!

Pittsburgh, PA – Cathedral of Learning (HDR)

Located at the University of Pittsburgh…the Cathedral of Learning is not only a great subject inside (as you have seen per my previous posts)…the outside is excellent as well!  Standing tall…it is one beautiful structure located in the midst of the campus.  If you are ever in Pittsburgh…stop by..you will not regret it!  Good luck Panthers!!

  • Pittsburgh, PA – Cathedral of Learning (HDR)

One more shot from the Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh.  This place is meant for HDR!!  People posted on the previous shots that it looks like something from Lord of the Rings or even Hogwarts from Harry Potter.   I’ll go with Hogwarts as my choice!   I can see Dumbledore teaching in Pittsburgh!   I enjoy the Harry Potter movies..so while checking out if Hogwarts was design upon any particular building (no luck)…I stumbled across the grading system at Hogwarts…too funny!!

Most O.W.L.s  (Ordinary Wizzarding Level)consist of two parts, a written theoretical test and a practical demonstration of skills before the examiners. Subjects are graded on the following scale:

    Passing Grades

    • O = Outstanding
    • E = Exceeds Expectations
    • A = Acceptable

    Failing Grades

    • P = Poor
    • D = Dreadful
    • T = Troll

Great stuff…ah writers!!  Imagine getting a “T”  = Troll grade…funny!!   Ok, have a magical day!

  • Pittsburgh, PA – PNC Park (HDR)

Pittsburgh, PA…one of my favorite places 2 visit!  When I stop by, it usually means I get to see the Pirates, Steelers or Penguin play a game!  My favorite teams!  I was in Pittsburgh recently and had a chance to catch the PNC Park Tour.  I was hanging with my good friend Dave DiCello.  I have been to many baseball stadiums in MLB….PNC Park is one of the best!  Small, clean, safe, family orientated and amazing views!  The skyline view from the seats are fantastic!  The view above is from the press box.   Unfortunately, the Pirates have been horrible for many years, so you can walk up game day and get great seats and ticket prices are cheap!!  Not sure if the Pirates will ever be in the playoffs ever again…but I am a fan for life!  Go Bucs!!!

This is a follow on shot from my Cathedral of Learning HDR.  As we were leaving Dave was setting up for this HDR.   I liked the view and told him that it would look great in Infrared!  You can see a small part of the Cathedral of Learning to the right…the only building section showing.  IR Rules!   A simple path lines with trees looks sweet!   Just like a winter scene in midst of summer!  My travel schedule slows in September.   After I get back…I will work on a Infrared Tutorial. Probably will take me a few weeks.  So roughly look for it in early October.  Enjoy!
