This is from one early AM in Munich. I woke up at 4 AM this day to get the cool railway tunnels down below the Rathaus and as I was walking back to the hotel, I grabbed this shot. Nice long exposure creates wonderful cloud movement!
From the lovely city of Munich, Germany…if you walk around Marienplatz you can find some great architecture. A few churches, shopping, the Rathaus and much more! Hop off the U-Bahn and walk about 1/4 mile and you come across Theatine Church. Hard not to find it due to its yellowish exterior color. The outside is tough to photograph…tight quarters. Inside is the best option! Not many church interiors look bad in HDR. Enjoy your Thursday!
Here is Part 2 to the Neues Rathaus in Munich, Germany. This is a full shot of the town hall…using the 12-24 I could easily get it all in. Wide angle lenses sure are wonderful! I post processed this one last nite. It has become a fast favorite and is my screensaver right now. The blue hour is a special time for HDR. After seeing this shot…definately tops for HDR time of the day! I am happy to see all the hits to the HDR tutorial I posted. Hope it has helped or peaked your interest in HDR’s! Please feel free to ask me any questions if you ever need any help! Hopefuly I can be of assistance. Enjoy!
Here is the train station (bahnhof) for Frottmaning, Germany. When you visit Allianz Stadium (per my last post)…this is your stop. When I arrived…I stopped and looked around and thought…great place for an HDR. Most stations near Munich are not so exciting. This one had some flair! Frottmaning is about 20 minutes from Marienplatz on the S-Bahn – U6 Train. This past trip was the first time I really had a chance to explore Munich. Such a great city! I’d say my favorite in Germany.
I took my photos of Allianz Arena and made the 10 minute walk back to the station. It was about 10 PM and the station was quiet. I set up my tripod and took this with 5 exposures and a cable release. I hear the arena lights up in different colors for certain events…so maybe one day I will be back to Frottmaning!
If you are visiting Germany…some top places to visit are: 1. Munich 2. Berlin 3. Cologne 4. Nurnberg 5. Frankfurt. During my stay in Munich I looked into visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle …unfortunately, just a bit too far – about 2 hours one way. I hear you can catch a bus tour from Munich or take the train to Fussen. Hopefully one day I will get there. It was featured in such movies as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Great Escape. Lots to see in Munich…near and far! I look forward to visiting again!
Here is an HDR of the Allianz Arena in Munich. The building is very stylish! This was the same nite I went to the Olympic Park…afterwards I took a train over to take these shots. It pretty close from Marienplatz…about 20 minutes north. The sun was setting and it was quiet. A few other people were there taking photos. As there were no events going on…you could not get too close. When it gets dark out…the arena lights up white. I liked the idea of this not being illuminated and the sun setting in the background. The HDR’ing creates a bit of a halo over the arena….kind of looks like a giant UFO has landed! ET phone home!

I had a free evening to enjoy Munich and planned to visit the Olympic Park. The objective was the soccer field for some HDR’s. I arrived at 7 PM and unfortunately the gates were closed to the soccer stadium. Looks like a great spot for and HDR…one day I will get back. So then I decided to walk around the park and enjoy the scenery.
In the Olympic Park they have a concert hall, swimming hall, tennis courts, great internal roads (for bike riding, roller blading, jogging, etc…) It was a beautiful nite, so there were lots of people having a great time. There are also a few lakes and as I walked by this one, the sun was very bright and the reflections on the water were wonderful! I figured a good time for an IR shot!
I took this shot and post processed in Photoshop. I played around with the hues and liked the sky in red. A nice contrast to the white trees. I really enjoy experimenting different shots with my IR camera….but standard lake photos with trees are a must!!! Enjoy!

The Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) is located at Marienplatz in Munich, Germany. It hosts the city government including the city council, offices of the mayors and part of the administration. It was built bewtween 1868 and 1907. 1874 was the last usage for the old town hall. The basement of the New Town Hall belongs to a restuarant called the Ratskeller.
Munich is one of my favorite cities in Germany. The people, acrhitecture and the train systems to get around locally are wonderful! I have spent many an evening in front of this New Town Hall eating at the outdoor restaurant seating overlooking this beauiful building….and of course having a nice cold German beer!
I took this shot at a great time for HDR….the blue hour! When the builings are lit up at nite, the sun goes down and the sky is a nice royal blue. A nice contrast for any photo…especially HDR’s!! I took this with my usual 5 exposures, tripod, cable release….processed in Photomatix. Auf Wiedersehen!!
