When traveling to Letchworth State Park depending on the route you take to get there…you can drive through the small town of Portageville. Just a few old historical buildings…some still in business some not. I love little towns like this! I saw this old business on the way in and decided to stop by on my way out and take this photo. Any old abandoned location needs that grunge look…so I added the feel via OnOne’s Photo Tools 2.6 Plug-in. Places like this want to be HDR’d. Tough to pass this one by!
My beautiful hometown of Austin just before sunset on a recent photowalk with our local HDR Mafia. (Jim Nix, Dave Wilson, Michael Tuuk, Andy ATMTX and Todd Landry). We all had a chance to get this great shot. Austin looks great now…the past few years we had many cranes floating around the skyline…this made the skyline photo less than appealing. Now you can see Austin in its full beauty! Enjoy!
We recently drove through the famous Roswell, New Mexico…on our way back from SoCal to Austin. We stopped in just to grab a bite to eat at McDonalds and walked the Main Street just to grab a few shots, then we were on our way. I had seen these street lamps in a pic before and had to take one. Now do I believe we are not alone in this universe…yes. Do I believe aliens are visiting us and fly over our skies…hmmm, not sure. Did a UFO crash in 1947 in Roswell? Looks like a job for Mulder and Scully to prove or disprove. But this small town is cute and I must admit to loving the alien stuff all over. It gives Roswell character. I stopped and even bought a few knick knacks. I have 3 small bendable aliens on my desk right now! And in our fridge…a 4-pack of Alien Amber Ale! I’ll take a pic of it soon. Here are a few pics for now….will put up a few more in the future. Just streets shots for fun! I heard Aliens love Arby’s!!
Its been a while since my last IR post. I am still working on my IR Photography book for Focal Press. It is still on schedule to be released 1st Quarter 2012. I will keep you posted. This shot is from PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA. I was walking to the stadium and decided to try it in IR. The ferry was cruising by and it adds to the Burgh feel! My Pirates faded quickly since July and now are outta the playoff race, but I def enjoyed those few weeks we were in contention! PNC Park is one of the most beautiful parks in MLB! …even in IR! =)
This past week I picked up a copy of Matt Klowskowski’s “Photoshop Compositing Secrets” – Unlocking the Key to Perfect Selections and Amazing Photoshop Effects for Totally Realistic Composites. I have been learning to shoot portraits more and more these days. I love composite sports portraits and in the past year found an artist/photographer called Joel Grimes. I truly love his work. I have been trying to accomplish such portraits, but have come up short without the proper tutorial. I picked up bits and pieces…more info was needed.
A month or ago I heard that Matt Kloskowski (@mattkloskowski) was coming out with a compositing book. I was excited to finally get some super inside scoops! I picked up the book and after reading through it was amazed! Wonderful book Matt!!! I would call this my favorite photo tutorial book to date!! The book contains 16 fantastic Chapters and a whopping total of 381 pages filled with tons of great secrets:
1. Selection Secrets
2. Basic Composite
3. Creating Motion
4. Senior Portrait
5. Professional Office
6. Family Group Portrait
7. Studio Sports Portrait
8. Live Concert
9. Multiple-Exposure Action Photo
10. Movie Poster
11. Ultra-Gungg/Edgy HDR Background
12. Sports Template
13. Single Photo Composite
14. One Person-Mulitple Poses
15. Adding Illustration
16. Advanced Commercial Compositing
Matt gives you all the details from lighting, photo set up and photoshop settings. All done in an easy and simple picture filled way…so you can create your own art and fantastic composites. Here you can see some of the shots used in the tutorials…great work!
Now my skill level for composites if very very low…I did a quick attempt after reading Matt’s Chapter 13 – Single Photo Composite I learned how to do this in 5 minutes!
If this style is of interest to you and you want to learn compositing…go pick up Matt’s book! I will give it 10 Selections out of 10 Selections! Kudos Matt!! You can also find lots of great photography tutorials over at Kelby Training
From sunny Southern California in a horse loving town called Yorba Linda you can find the excellent equestrian sports center Rocking T Ranch. I’ll post more info on this cool ranch soon. But now I’ll focus on the wonderful town of Yorba Linda. Some info from the web: One of the reasons Yorba Linda is such an attractive place to live is due to its landscaping and extensive trail system. There are some 100 miles of equestrian, biking and walking trails in the City.
The love of horses and the City’s commitment to equestrian activities helps set Yorba Linda apart from other communities. In addition to the well-maintained horse trails, the City has also built three state-of-the-art equestrian arenas. The nearby Chino Hills State Park also affords residents the opportunity to ride in unspoiled wilderness.

A few of our local Austin HDR Mafia guys got together for a small photowalk recently as our new friend Todd Landry was in town and wanted to go out shooting in Austin. Most of us had shot nearly everything in downtown Austin, so the challenge was to find something new. I scratched my head and looked all around and took a few shots. Not sure if they would be different? That is def a challenge for any photographer bored with their local area. Push yourself to find that new pic! This was different and maybe cool? We had a great time shooting in 103 degree weather this nite! Some of the great photogs on the walk (links below)…nice to meet you Todd! If anyone is ever in Austin, give me a jingle…maybe we can meet up!
While cruising around upstate New York recently, I saw this old beat down barn on the side of the road. I pulled over and grabbed the shot. I was on my way somewhere so didn’t have time to set up for an HDR…but it was a sunny day…probably would not have looked so great. With this shot I just used NIK’s Tonal Contrast to give it a little kick. Road side shots are always fun!! Enjoy!
Pittsburgh is one super photographic city! When shooting with Dave DiCello and Theaterwiz (Mike Criswell) recently…we hit the city at 5 AM! The North Shore was the target for sunrise. We were walking riverside and I saw Dave down on this seating area and as he was around the corner…I grabbed this shot. A foreground subject with the Clemente Bridge and the city in the background. Not only do I need to move to the Burgh one day to see all my fav sports teams, I better get my hard drive ready for tons of pics!!
