San Francisco, CA – Grace Cathedral (HDR)

Grace Cathedral (on Nob Hill) in San Francisco is a wonderful location to photograph.  No problem with tripods inside or out!  Its a bit tricky to grab an outside photo.  Lots of stuff going on in front of this beautiful building.  A street and this little park are the only options.  On this chilly day, I finished my interior shots and waited for the blue hour to arrive.  Seems as though it is a doggie walking area…as all the wealthy on Nob Hill use it for a meeting spot to chat and let their dogs enjoy some fresh air.    So the challenge was to get the fountain in the shot while trying to angle the flag pole so it would not affect the shot too much.  Hopefully accomplished?  Its a nice place to relax and enjoy the city sounds.

Some info from the web on Nob Hill: The area was settled in the rapid urbanization happening in the city in the late 19th century. Because of the views and its central position, it became an exclusive enclave of the rich and famous on the west coast who built large mansions in theneighborhood. This included prominent tycoons such as Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University and other members of The Big Four. The neighborhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, except for the granite wall that had surrounded the Stanford and Hopkins mansions. The mansion of tycoon James Flood, though gutted by fire, was rebuilt and stands to this day as the headquarters of the Pacific-Union Club. While the neighborhood was able to maintain its affluence following the quake, many of the rich rebuilt their mansions further west in Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow. Many of the hotels now in the area were built over the ruins of the former mansions. Since the 1990s, Chinatown to its east has been slowly expanding into the neighborhood, shifting its demographics to a more Chinese characteristic.

I got shots of Grace from this same spot (brilliant minds think alike?) but it was daylight and I am not too fond of the outcome. This is gorgeous! Well done Pete.
