Austin, TX – Pedernales River (HDR)

From a few week back in Austin, TX…I was on my way to Westcave Preserve for a photo opp with my buddy Jim Nix (Nomadic Pursuits) and before you get to the entrance of the Preserve you must travel over this super small one lane bridge.  The bridge is located over the Pedernales River.   As we arrived early…a perfect time for a few photos.  There is a nice rock river bed where you can set up and get some great river shots!   Long exposures lead to the silky water motion.  I am a big fan of any water in motion in photos.  I can recall my first water motion capture on my DSLR a few years back…I was amazed…and thought I was a photographic genius!  LOL  Its so easy to do…and the effect is always great to see!

Info from teh web:   The spring-fed, free-flowing and very scenic Pedernales River flows through the heart of Lyndon B. Johnson’s part of Texas. Rising in Kimble County, the river flows 106 miles through Gillespie, Blanco, Hays and Travis Counties to the confluence of the Colorado River above Lake Travis and Austin. The surrounding land is rocky and rugged, with the ground rising at the top of the Texas Hill Country to form a river valley below.

At normal levels the Pedernales is too low to paddle, but when rains come and the river rises it becomes a fast-moving whitewater stream of immense fun and thrills. It is not a river for the timid or the inexperienced – there is plenty of trouble if you fail to negotiate the rapids and drops properly. From Harper to US Highway 281 the river is narrow and very shallow, usually not navigable at all, but below Highway 281 the river widens and gets a little deeper. The upper section is very near Fredericksburg and Johnson City, for those who want a great bed & breakfast, quaint shops and restaurants for their time off the river.
